Flag this message What to do if prospects laugh at you
Hi Nji,
Lots of people have been taking time
out of their day to email me about
their biggest MLM problems. In fact,
I'm getting several hundred each week!
You'll definitely want to read this
email where I respond to one of them -
especially IF...
-You're having trouble getting others
to take you, your products, or the
opportunity seriously. And...
-If you'd like to know how I went from
being a "nobody"... to being over 80%
of a 13 year old company's volume...
in less than a year.
So without further adieu here's the...

Ann,
I have only recently started in network
marketing, but I already sensed that
the systems my upline was teaching me
weren't going to take me as far as I
wanted to go. I am a 21 year old college
student promoting health and wellness
products so my warm market wasn't that
big to start out with.
I have no doubt in my mind that the
systems taught by my upline work and I
do believe they use them, but most of
them were already wealthy and successful
network marketers to begin with so of
course they knew plenty of people who
would trust their judgement and want to
do what there doing.
Even listening to the training CDs
provided by top distributors in the
company made me wonder why they think
just because they have plenty of people
who are wealthy and willing to take a
chance on starting a business at the
drop of the hat doesn't mean I do!!!
Most people don't just hear a college
kid rant for 20 min. and want to go
into business with him.

Matthew,
I know EXACTLY where you're coming from
and your question/comments summarize
perfectly the root problem with the
traditional approach network marketers
are taught to use.
Most people who start a home based
business do not have tons of credibility
or accomplishments to their name
(especially if you're a young person
trying to recruit people twice your
age), so this automatically puts them
in a position of weakness and desperation.
And the clingy, harassment-style sales
methods most people end up resorting to
(BECAUSE they're in a position of weakness)
only compound the problem.
My son and I were involved in an MLM
together at one point and he struggled
with this same issue for years.
He managed to recruit me and his best
friend into the business, but no one else
would take him seriously!
And as far as selling your health and
wellness products goes, what are you
supposed to do if no one you know cares
about their health or is really into all
that "natural healing type stuff?"
It's a very frustrating and overwhelming
feeling.
And the worst part about this approach is,
no amount of additional effort (ie -
talking to more people), will make things
any better!
For myself, I may not have had the
obstacle of age to overcome as much, but
I was a stay at home mom - hardly the
type of person an already successful and
well-connected prospect would be tripping
over themselves to go into business with.

UP UNTIL JUST A FEW YEARS AGO, I COULDN'T
SPONSOR SOMEONE IF MY LIFE DEPENDED ON IT!

In my previous company, all my work
resulted in me sponsoring a whopping four
people - in over three year's time.
And it wasn't because I was slacking off
either.
My life was CONSUMED with setting up
appointments, showing the plan, and
bringing people to meetings. I was
religious about it.
But nothing worked. It just seemed like
everyone I talked to was totally turned
off by the idea of MLM - no matter how
enthusiastic I was about it.
I finally got to the point where I had
completely and utterly run out of people
to talk to.
I explained my problem to my upline and
she said something that made my stomach
churn:
"ANN, YOU'LL JUST HAVE TO START
OVER AND MAKE ANOTHER NAMES LIST."
I literally felt sick.
The thought of going back and trying to
recruit the same people who I had already
prospected four or five times already was
almost enough to make me throw up.
I was absolutely devastated by her
suggestion, and I decided right then and
there that I would do whatever it took to
find a better way to do it.
I looked for a solution on the internet -
outside of the training that my company
offered - and believe it or not, because
of my "treasonous" decision, I stumbled
across some stuff that actually... WORKED!
It worked SO WELL in fact, that I joined
another company - one that had been around
for over 13 years - and...

IN JUST TWO YEARS, MY TEAM AND I WERE
BRINGING IN OVER 80% OF THEIR NEW SIGN-UPS!

(Please note: I'm not saying that you need
to join a new company to become successful.
You can rise to the top of any company
very quickly by implementing a few
key strategies that aren't commonly taught
to MLMers. The only reason I joined a new
company at this point was because I no
longer fully believed in my previous one.)
So what changed?
How did I "miraculously" go from
sponsoring a grand total of four people
over the course of three years, to
routinely sponsoring 50 people a month
like it was nothing?
And more importantly, how can you do the
same?

PROPER POSITIONING!
===================
In my previous company, my upline taught
me to go out and preach to everyone I
could (friends, family, whoever) about
our one-of-a-kind products and globe
sweeping opportunity -- so that's what I
did!
And as you're probably more than familiar
with yourself, this caused them to view me
as a desperate, unprofessional, amateur.
That's because I positioned myself this
way by feverishly chasing after them and
trying to get them signed up and on the
product.
Why was I always in hot pursuit?
Because I had a need that they could
satisfy.
I wanted them to either buy something from
me or sign-up for my business, and they
were well aware of this fact.
This gave me ZERO power or control --
instead they had it all. My prospects could
say "yes" or "no" to me at any point. They
were the final decision makers and there
was nothing I could do about it!
Obviously it goes without saying, trying to
sell and recruit this way (without having
any power or control) was NOT a good spot
to be in!
Some uplines will try to get around this
by teaching you to use some tricky "reverse
psychology" techniques on your prospects to
make them THINK you have something they
want, but people can easily see through
these for the manipulative tactics they are.
(In fact, my son almost got a severe "beat
down" on one occasion for using just such
techniques!)
The simple fact is, if you're the one
approaching the prospect, instead of the
other way around, there's ALMOST NOTHING
you can say that WON'T make you look like
just another annoying salesperson.
Why?
Because of this elephant in the room,
this unavoidable and universal truth that
EVERYONE instinctively knows deep down
inside, yet no one in direct sales wants
to say out loud:

EVERYONE KNOWS THAT TRULY SUCCESSFUL,
RESPECTED PEOPLE WHO HAVE "MADE IT"
IN THEIR FIELD, DON'T HAVE TO GO
LOOKING FOR BUSINESS.
BUSINESS COMES TO THEM.
-------------------------------------
So when you're the one who approaches
your prospect - ESPECIALLY when they
never expressed any interest in what
you're offering in the first place -
this immediately puts you in an inferior
position in their mind that is almost
impossible to overcome at that point.
Let me share with you what I discovered
that allowed me to genuinely turn this
situation around so that I was the one
in control and my prospects were the
ones who truly needed me (I think you'll
quickly see how this could have a dramatic
and overnight effect on your business).
Imagine that you are a well-known,
recognized authority on the subject
of working from home.
You're a best-selling author and are highly
sought after for public speaking engagements.
You have a regular column in a popular home
based business magazine and are frequently
interviewed by radio shows, industry
publications and popular website owners.
Do you think people might take you a little
more seriously then?
Do you think you would ever have to waste
any more time calling people who don't want
to be bothered?
Do you think you would ever have to go
looking for business again?
Or do you think people who already had an
interest in your type of product or service
would seek you out because of your
prominence, expertise and ability to help
them?
I think we can both easily agree that
someone who is a recognized expert is
going to get a lot more business - and
is going to get it a lot easier - than
someone who isn't, right?
Of course, as Matthew implied in his
email, your immediate thoughts are
probably something along the lines of:
"Well that's fine for some people, but I'M
NO EXPERT! I could never pull off
positioning myself as one because I'm brand
new to all this. I don't have any experience
or credibility."
I thought the same thing. And I probably
would have gone on thinking that way forever
if one of my mentors hadn't let me in on this
little secret:
You don't need to spend the next two decades
of your life holed up in a cave somewhere with
some Buddhist monks in order to become an
"expert" at something.
You don't even need a list of accomplishments
a mile high in order to gain credibility and
command respect from your prospects.
Really.
This is one of the biggest myths and
fallacies about getting business to come
to you.
Most people think that earning the right
to be called an expert only comes AFTER
you've become successful.
What I discovered was the complete
opposite.
The fastest way TO become successful is
by POSITIONING yourself as an expert.
And there are ways to do this without
having to put years of experience under
your belt.
You can do it RIGHT NOW - no matter how
new you are to this (OR how long you've
been at it), no matter how successful
you are or AREN'T.
