If you had told me, back in April of 2008 that I would have grown SWS to more than half a million members in the first 10 months, I would have told you that you were crazy. Top Tip - Eight Great Google Adwords Tips
Top Tips for Success with Google Adwords.
If you use Google Adwords, then I'm sure you'll find these 8 tips very useful.
Tip 1: Understand the link between keywords, your ads and your website.
Google is all about relevancy. Google wants to be sure that its customers find websites relevant to their searches. It's obvious really.
So your list of keywords in your adgroup, the ads you have set for that adgroup AND that the page you send visitors to when they click on you ad have to be relevant to each other.
Google actually checks this three way relationship and if it likes what it sees you will get a lot of cheaper impressions for your keyword. Google actually uses a quality score for each keyword which you can check. You can find out more about quality scores at

Keep thinking about this three way relationship when you set up your campaigns.
Tip 2: Avoid Broad Searches
Broad Match is the default setting when you set up your keywords for Google Adwords.
What this means is that Google will match your keywords against a search if your words are present in the search regardless of the order of the words, whether they appear together, are plurals, etc.
As an example if you use the term used shoes as a broad match then the following searches in Google would match to your keywords
used shoes
used shoes shop
used horse shoes
shoes used in modern dance
new and not used shoes
As you can see this can give quite a few matches that may not be relevant to your website.
You should avoid broad searches and target you keywords with phrased and exact matches.
A phrased match is one where the keywords will only match if they are used in the exact sequence of your keyword. You enter a phrased keyword by putting quotes "" around your keyword.
So for our example, if I used "used shoes" then
used shoes
used shoes shop
would match but
used horse shoes
shoes used in modern dance
new and not used shoes
would not.
An exact match is one where the keywords will match only if that exact phrase is entered and no other words are used for the search. You enter an exact keyword by putting a square bracket [] around your keyword.
So for our example, if I used [used shoes] then
used shoes
would match but
used shoes shop
used horse shoes
shoes used in modern dance
new and not used shoes
would not.
Tip 3: Organise your ad groups and campaigns
One campaign with one adgroup and one massive list of keywords is doomed. This is the one single mistake that many first time users of Google Adwords make.
Before you start using Adwords, I strongly recommend you sit down with pen and paper to plan out your campaign and adgroup structure.
What works best does tend to vary based on what you are trying to sell. However as a guide for each campaign you should aim for no more than four or five adgroups each with ten to twenty good keywords. This will give you a set of campaigns which are easy to maintain and the keywords in each adgroup can be targeted effectively.
This is only a guideline though. I've actually had an adgroup with only one keyword and it performed wonderfully.
Tip 4: Avoid using the Content network.
You can set up your campaigns so that you ads appear on both Google's search network and its content network.
The content network is made up of websites that allow Google ads to appear.
I recommend turning off the content option when you set up your campaign because your ad may not always appear on websites that a very relevant to the ad you are running. You might get a lot of impressions but I would suspect you would get few click throughs and those would probably not lead to conversions.
Tip 5: Only advertise to locations that it makes sense to.
When you set up your campaigns you can select which countries you want your adverts to appear to.
So for example, if you sell a product in the USA that you would not ship outside then there is little point for your ad to appear to people in Europe or China for example.
Tip 6: Pick the times you want your adverts to appear
You can select what time of day you want your ads to appear. So if you are trying to advertise to UK buyers who are surfing during the evening, then those are the times you should be setting your ads to appear.
Tip 7: Use Landing Pages
So many people make the serious mistake of sending their visitors to their home page when they click on their ads.
You really want to send then directly to the page that is relevant to the ad you are running.
So for example, if you have an online clothes shop then for any adverts you are running for men's gloves, you really want to send them directly to the page for men's gloves.
So, don't use your home page unless it makes sense. Send your visitors to land on a page that is relevant to the advert they clicked on. If you don't have a page that is relevant to the advert, then why are you running that advert!
Tip 8: Use more that one Advert and TEST!
Always, always have more than one advert running for an adgroup. This allows you to see which advert is getting the best clicks through rate. You can then change the lower performing adverts and try to beat your best one. You will soon find that you have some very effective adverts.
However to test properly, you need to set the adverts to rotate evenly. This is set in the campaign settings. In the ad serving option under the advanced settings, make sure you select the radio button for Rotate: Show ads more evenly.

We also laid out a "plan" that we could follow each time we set-up a new campaign.
Step 1:

Research several different industries and find out which one you want to promote. Before you make your decision, you will have to analyze the customers within the industries, how hot the industry is (is it seasonal), and check out to see what other affiliates are doing within this industry and determine if they are profitable.
Step 2:

You have found an industry that you are interested in, see opportunity, and now what? You need to find a/or product(s) that you want to promote. You can do this by visiting affiliate networks such as Clickbank.com, CJ.com, Linkshare.com, Saleflurry.com, or Shareasale.com. All of these are quality networks with many different products you can sell.
Step 3:

Create a list of keywords to promote the products. You will want to align the customers (the search terms) with products that are highly relevant, and highly targeted. Create a website and promote your products on it. Since you will be selling products for companies, a website is a great place to do this.
Step 4:

Start advertising your website. This is the the final step to making money online. You have your industry, you have your products, you have your keywords, and you have your website (not required). You need to know exactly what you are doing because as soon as you start advertising you will be spending real money. If you aren't sure of what to do you can waste a lot of money.
We see this time and time again, people do not understand the correct way to use Google Adwords (or any other advertising network), and drive low quality, low converting traffic to their sites. These people "lose their shirts" within days of starting their campaigns, and more times than not, ever return to Internet marketing. DO NOT become one of these - there are resources available to prevent this.

Create a list of keywords to promote the products. You will want to align the customers (the search terms) with products that are highly relevant, and highly targeted. Many new advertisers do not understand how they will get credited for a sale, and do not use their affiliate linking code as the destination URL (when direct linking to merchant). Observations & predictions about Google's recent behavior

Got this email from John, a very astute Roundtable member (he was "Mr. Fishmonger" on my interview with four Intensive grads at http://www.perrymarshall.com/adwords/roundtable):

Over the past couple of weeks, I have been trying to increase my overall
search campaign CTR (which is +3%!) by continuously pausing the high
impression- low CTR keywords from my campaigns. I figured: OK, take out
the dogs that are not a good match for my market, and shoot for 6%, just
to see if I can do it.
What I have found is, I can't do it, no matter how many .5% or less high
impression keywords I cut.
I am still in the 3-4% range.
My theory: Broad Match Keywords are the cause.
Since Google is loosening it's standards, our broad match keywords are
showing up more and more to the unwashed masses, where they are less
relevant, in order for them to keep their click income up. It's like they
are taking our search keyword campaigns, and throwing them into the
content network.
The more keywords you have in a broad match long tail, the easier it is
for Google to justify doing this.
I am going to pause my broad keywords completely in some of my campaigns
to test it.

and phrase match words. Some broad match keywords have a very high CTR,
while the rest tank.
Google Broad Match = The new Content Network-rebranded, since they weren't
able to make that fly the way they intended to.
Here's to the poor unsuspecting fools out there who are making Google rich.

So let me explain.
The big advertising spenders are spending less with Google. But Google can still hit their revenue targets by making adjustments to their ad formula.
The best way for them to do this is with BROAD MATCH keywords. All they have to do is tweak a number somewhere in their engine and ads will show up more easily for terms that don't match.
So for example let's say you sell red wagons.
Smart advertisers bid on
[red wagon] (exact match only)
"red wagon" (ad shows only for queries that contain this phrase)
red wagon (ad could show for "red toyota station wagon" or any number of other unrelated searches)
Then they watch conversion rates and adjust bids accordingly, to make sure their ROI is solid.
Most people just bid on
red wagon (broad match)
And they get all those kinds of traffic mixed together.
So if Google lowers the quality threshold to get more exposures and clicks, they win and you lose.
I'm telling you, you've got to follow my system and you've got to sleep with one eye open.
Now... let me tell you what this means for Google.
AdGooRoo.com monitors millions of search engine results and they are noting a 54% growth in Google's "first page advertisers" - see http://www.adgooroo.com/blog/ for their full report. They very well may be poised for a record quarter for Q4 2008. That's what I'm predicting.
In any case, Google very much has control of their destiny. But you'd better make sure you're on top of your conversion numbers!

Google AdWords vs. Free Search Engine Rankings
Nji,
A lot of people ask me about the merits of buying clicks on
search engines with AdWords, vs. getting free visitors with
what's called "search engine optimization" - loading up your web
pages with strategic keywords so you can get ranked #10 or
#3 or #1 on Google's free search.
Well at first glance free is certainly better than paid, but
there are some big IF's that you need to consider first!
Remember: you can only optimize a website for maybe ten
words and phrases - not hundreds - so you should choose
very, very carefully.
But the most important thing is choosing the RIGHT
words and phrases to optimize for.
Now here's the kicker:
If you don't use a pay per click strategy to determine which
words and phrases actually attract paying customers first, you will
almost always choose the wrong keywords. The words you
initially think you want are almost always different than the ones
that actually work - believe me, I've made that mistake many
times.
Considering it takes 30 days to several months to see
results when you're playing the search engine optimization
game, you CANNOT afford to target the wrong keywords.
When you do pay per click campaigns properly, you'll
see that there are almost always a few really productive words
and phrases that only 2-3 people are bidding on, instead
of 10 or 20 bidders. What that means is that those people are
not optimizing their websites for those same keywords either.
Well just like pay per click, search engine phrases have
varying degrees of competitiveness. If you want a #1
ranking for the phrase "Digital Camera" it's going to be
a LOT harder than getting a #1 ranking for "Kodak DX6340"
which is a popular digital camera. And the traffic will be
much more targeted, too. When you do search engine
optimization, you must pick battles you can win.

A lot of people ask me about the merits of buying clicks on
search engines with AdWords, vs. getting free visitors with
what's called "search engine optimization" - loading up your web
pages with strategic keywords so you can get ranked #10 or
#3 or #1 on Google's free search.
Well at first glance free is certainly better than paid, but
there are some big IF's that you need to consider first!
Remember: you can only optimize a website for maybe ten
words and phrases - not hundreds - so you should choose

words and phrases to optimize for.

words and phrases actually attract paying customers first, you will
almost always choose the wrong keywords. The words you
initially think you want are almost always different than the ones

optimization, you must pick battles you can win.

Why would anyone want to be an affiliate, Nji?
Hi Nji,
When I got online looking for ways to supplement my income
back in 1999 I didn't have my own product(s) to sell. Even
if I would have had my own products, I didn't have the
knowledge required to know how to sell them online.
So the FIRST thing I did after reading Robert Allen's
Multiple Streams of Income book was get on his conference
calls to learn about OTHER ways to make money online since I
didn't have my own products. That's when I first discovered

Do you really need more than one Nji?
Hi Nji,
We've been talking lately about the RIGHT kind of affiliate
programs and the WRONG kind of affiliate programs.
Let's shift our focus today to the NUMBER of affiliate
programs you promote. This is also a very important
consideration.
The fact is that there are many people who are a member of
TOO FEW affiliate programs and there are many people who are
a member of TOO MANY. There are only a handful of people who
have found the magic "sweet spot" right in the middle and
those are the happy people who are making the most money.
Why is TOO FEW affiliate programs a problem?
Joining too few affiliate programs is a problem for 3 MAJOR
reasons:
#1. The bottom line is that you absolutely, positively MUST
start earning multiple streams of income. One income stream,
even 2 is not enough in today's world. If you are only
relying on you job as your main source of income right now,
you're a sitting duck for a financial disaster. If you lose
your job or your health, God forbid, you could be in big
trouble financially. Most people are just one paycheck away
from bankruptcy.
Affiliate marketing is the same way. If you're relying on
just one or two affiliate programs to pull in the bulk of
your income, you're extremely vulnerable. Even if you've
built up a big residual income in a program, if it goes out
of business so do you. I had one program a couple of years
ago that I was earning $5,000+ per month from and then
circumstances happened with the program where they had to
cancel all recurring billings... I lost $60,000+ a year in
income in the blink of an eye! You absolutely, positively
MUST develop multiple streams of income to be secure in
today's world.
#2. Joining only one or two affiliate program does not give
you enough experience to compare strengths and weaknesses of
different programs. It leaves you being unaware of different
possibilities and that's very dangerous to your fiscal
health.
#3. There's is a saying that "If all you have is a hammer,
every problem looks like a nail." If you only have one or
two different products or programs to promote, that's not
enough to solve the many different problems people will be
coming to you for. You need to have a variety of tools in
your affiliate toolbox so you can pull out the right one at
the right time for the right person. If you don't, you'll be
leaving money on the table. It's that simple.
Why is TOO MANY affiliate programs a problem?
Joining too many affiliate programs is a problem for 2 MAJOR
reasons:
#1. You'll get way too distracted. Focus has great power and
if you have too many things to think about at one time,
you'll get confused. When you're confused, you don't take
action. When you don't action, you don't make money.
#2. People won't take you seriously. If you're promoting
everything and anything, people will sense your lack of
sincerity and have no desire to do business with you. One of
the big secrets to affiliate marketing success is promoting
things you have some experience with and believe in.
But there a magic "sweet spot" somewhere in the middle of
having enough products and programs to promote that keep you
diversified and capable of solving multiple problems for
people.
For example, if you get 100 people to visit your website and
only have one product you're promoting and your website
successfully converts 1 out of 100 visitors to a sale, then
you've made 1 sale. But if you have a couple more products
on your site that are related but different, you may find
that you get 3-5 people out of 100 who buy from you because
they find other things that solve their problems. So just
having a few different options for people can multiply your
income 300% or more without any additional effort.
In my experience, 5-6 different affiliate programs in a
niche is the generally the best starting point. This gives
you enough experience with different programs to compare
their strengths and weaknesses. It gives you enough
diversity so you can offer your prospects the right solution
at the right time. And it broadens your own affiliate
portfolio enough so that you can survive a disaster JUST IN
CASE one of the affiliate programs you are promoting falls
on hard times.

We've been talking lately about the RIGHT kind of affiliate
programs and the WRONG kind of affiliate programs.
Let's shift our focus today to the NUMBER of affiliate
programs you promote. This is also a very important
consideration.
The fact is that there are many people who are a member of
TOO FEW affiliate programs and there are many people who are
a member of TOO MANY. There are only a handful of people who
have found the magic "sweet spot" right in the middle and
those are the happy people who are making the most money.
Why is TOO FEW affiliate programs a problem?
Joining too few affiliate programs is a problem for 3 MAJOR
reasons:
#1. The bottom line is that you absolutely, positively MUST
start earning multiple streams of income. One income stream,
even 2 is not enough in today's world. If you are only
relying on you job as your main source of income right now,
you're a sitting duck for a financial disaster. If you lose
your job or your health, God forbid, you could be in big
trouble financially. Most people are just one paycheck away
from bankruptcy.
Affiliate marketing is the same way. If you're relying on
just one or two affiliate programs to pull in the bulk of
your income, you're extremely vulnerable. Even if you've
built up a big residual income in a program, if it goes out
of business so do you. I had one program a couple of years
ago that I was earning $5,000+ per month from and then
circumstances happened with the program where they had to
cancel all recurring billings... I lost $60,000+ a year in
income in the blink of an eye! You absolutely, positively
MUST develop multiple streams of income to be secure in
today's world.
#2. Joining only one or two affiliate program does not give
you enough experience to compare strengths and weaknesses of
different programs. It leaves you being unaware of different
possibilities and that's very dangerous to your fiscal
health.
#3. There's is a saying that "If all you have is a hammer,
every problem looks like a nail." If you only have one or
two different products or programs to promote, that's not
enough to solve the many different problems people will be
coming to you for. You need to have a variety of tools in
your affiliate toolbox so you can pull out the right one at
the right time for the right person. If you don't, you'll be
leaving money on the table. It's that simple.
Why is TOO MANY affiliate programs a problem?
Joining too many affiliate programs is a problem for 2 MAJOR

#1. You'll get way too distracted. Focus has great power and
if you have too many things to think about at one time,
you'll get confused. When you're confused, you don't take
action. When you don't action, you don't make money.
#2. People won't take you seriously. If you're promoting

that you get 3-5 people out of 100 who buy from you because
they find other things that solve their problems. So just
having a few different options for people can multiply your
income 300% or more without any additional effort.
In my experience, 5-6 different affiliate programs in a
niche is the generally the best starting point. This gives
you enough experience with different programs to compare
their strengths and weaknesses. It gives you enough
diversity so you can offer your prospects the right solution
at the right time. And it broadens your own affiliate
portfolio enough so that you can survive a disaster JUST IN

on hard times.

they give you EVERYTHING you need to make money right away.
Is that REALLY true?
Well, you get your own own custom affiliate website,
pre-written ads and banners, a list of online advertising
hot spots, etc. They say all you need to do is plug those
babies in and profit... Does it really happen that way?
NOT USUALLY!
The problem with joining affiliate programs is that people
get lazy. They slave away 40+ hours a week at their job and
then think they can take the standard affiliate website they
are given, plug it into a couple of free advertising tools
that take 5 minutes to setup and start making money right
away. People are willing to work their BUTT off at work
every day, but they want to not have to do ANYTHING with
their affiliate programs and make a bunch of money... It's
true.
Yes, it is possible to sign up for an affiliate program,
grab your affiliate link, promote it directly and make
money. Especially if you are using Google AdWords or ezine
solo ads which will talk about in future lessons...
But to really get an affiliate marketing business off the
ground, you need to have YOUR OWN WEBSITE... One that you
control... One that is on YOUR OWN DOMAIN NAME...

But if you're in the same conversation, you could say:

immediately - online and offline.
Here's 3 more potential problems with affiliate links...
Problem #1: Affiliate links can have your ID's removed from
them. Personally owned domain names allow you to cloak
affiliate links.
For example, let's look at the Empowerism affiliate link
again: http://www.empowerism.com/e/225339
That's OK. If people click that link and sign up for
Empowerism, you still get credit for the sale, but there is
a better way to do it for some instances. For example, if
you are talking to someone and you want them to check out
your Empowerism website, you could setup what is called a
"re-direct" script on your own domain name that makes the
Empowerism link look like this: "YourName.com/Empowerism".
People who click that link will still get to the same
website, but it looks more professional on the front-end and
ensures that nobody cuts off your affiliate ID in the
process which would cause you to lose the commission. This
applies to any and all affiliate programs and products you
promote.
One of the big reasons people fail as affiliates is because
they never invest in getting their own domain name and
website setup. Somehow they think this is an unnecessary
thing when the fact is, having your own domain name is one
of the MOST necessary things of all to succeed in this
business.
If you're promoting affiliate programs right now and you're
doing it without having your own domain name and website,
you're absolutely shooting yourself in the foot. You might
as well be playing ping-pong without a paddle or canoeing
